Wendy: Our Journey! :)

May 6th, 2012

For the AP exam I want to tell myself to stay focused. That I have worked hard this whole year to pass the exam. I know that if I passed both AP Spanish exams without all the practice we have done in this class, I can pass the AP English exam. I need to stay positive and have confidence in the hard work I’ve done and the things I have learned along the way.

Throughout the course of this journey I have become a stronger writer and reader. Both skills will help me pass the exam but also help me in college. I want to tell myself that even if I do not pass the exam, what I have learned in this class and all the hard work I have done will help me succeed in college and life. I know that this exam will be difficult, but in the end I will overcome that obstacle. I always tell myself, “work hard and strive for the best.” This time these words will not be an exception. I think we should all have confidence in the hard work we have done because there will be an excellent reward at the end of this road.

Wendy: AP Test and Stress!

April 15th, 2012

After taking the AP practice test yesterday, I don’t feel good about the test. I finished the multiple choice question but I did horrible on it. The essay prompts were difficult. I was unsure of what to write about. I was also not able to write all three essays. I think poetry has always been my strength in both the multiple choice section and the essay section. The way I plan to study for the AP exam is to keep practicing and keep studying my lit terms.

Currently nothing good has happened in my life besides getting accepted to Kalamazoo College. That is probably the college I will attend, but I am debating between Kalamazoo and UC Merced. Aside from that, I am feeling really stressed and overwhelmed with pretty much everything. All I want is for this month to end. I want May to come already and get over the three AP exams. That way I will able to just focus on finishing the year strong and finally graduate.

Quizzards: March 8

March 12th, 2012

There were fewer Quizzards this time, but it’s wonderful to see who is really stepping things up, making sure to put in consistent study, and reading The Awakening closely.

Congratulations to the five Quizzards: Wendy, Chavonni, Chris, Nathaly, and Ellie!

Wendy: The Awakening

March 4th, 2012

So far I am loving this book. At first I thought it went to slow, but now it is going much faster and the drama keeps increasing. The book is amazing, and I believe we can all connect to it. I think Kate Chopin wrote the book because at some point of our lives, we all have an awakening in our lives. Sometimes we just realize we want something different because the way we are living is no longer satisfying us. This book is really good and I can’t wait to discuss about it in class. :)

Wendy: AP Test!!

February 26th, 2012

Taking the test on Saturday while feeling really sick was horrible. It was good practice, but I know I would have done better if I was not feeling sick. I felt rushed during the essays and I was not able to finish all three essays. After taking the practice test, I learned that I need to get better at writing faster so I can complete all three essays. I am starting to get worried and scared that I will not pass the test because I can’t finish writing my essays. I hope that by continuing to practice, I will get better.

Wendy: Hamlet Experience

February 19th, 2012

Reading Hamlet has been great. I had heard many people talk about Hamlet. They always told me it was a hard and boring book. However, I personally have enjoyed the book greatly. Yes, it has been hard, but I have used the resources available to me to make it easier. Hamlet has changed the way I see things such as revenge. Before I believed that revenge was sometimes okay, but after reading Hamlet, I’ve learned that it is not. Revenge is never good because it can destroy a family and all those who you love.

Let’s get the number of Quizzards up to at least 15 next week!

Wendy: Hamlet’s Skull

February 12th, 2012

So I was looking for pictures to upload about Hamlet, and a lot of pictures of Hamlet holding a skull appeared. This captured my interest and I researched it. I found out that the skull is actually a symbol for Hamlet’s debate about death. It represents how close he wants to be to death and the physical realization to death. Moreover, it represents his to be or not to be speech.

Wendy: The Scarlet Letter

January 22nd, 2012

Every part in the book is very significant and important not to skip any detail. The symbols in the novel give emphasis to the message of the novel. One of the most important symbols since the beginning of the book is the scarlet letter. The scarlet letter throughout the book has changed. At the beginning of the book the scarlet letter was a sign of punishment; it was a sign of shame. The scarlet letter was a way for society to single her out, to shun her from society. It was a way for Hester to feel the burden of her sin.

However, now that we are approaching the end the scarlet letter has changed. Now the scarlet letter is not so serious. Society doesn’t really believe so strongly in it. If fact, many people believe she shouldn’t wear it any more because she has done good things to society. I think that the scarlet letter represents how we sometimes judge people without really knowing them. Often we tend to make assumptions about why people commit certain actions without knowing their real reasons. However, after getting to know the person we realize that our assumptions are wrong. This is now occurring to Hester. People thought she was this horrible woman who cheated on her husband but now they have seen the real Hester. The scarlet letter is a judgment and the way people see Hester, which is why it has changed throughout the novel.

Wendy: The Scarlet Letter Reflection

January 8th, 2012

“Her sin, her ignominy, were the roots which she had struck into the soil” (93).

The Scarlet Letter is a book I am really enjoying. Even though the language is sometimes hard to understand, I am still loving this book. I like it so much that David and I Skype just to read it together. The quote above is my favorite quote of the novel so far because to me this quote says so much of what Hester’s life is like, just because she made one mistake.

This book not only demonstrates how sins were punished but also how one mistake can ruin or change someone’s life forever. This book so far is affecting my soul because it is making me reflect that life is about how others a great deal of the time decide what happens to our lives. They judge our mistakes and decide the consequences for our punishments.

For instance, as we grow, our parents judge and create the consequences for our mistakes. In the novel the people of the town decide what to do with her. My favorite part of the novel is when the husband visits Hester in prison. So far what is confusing is just the language because it has words I don’t understand. My favorite character is Hester Prynne because she is just an intense woman that even though she feels like falling sometimes, she manages to stay standing and confront her reality. My prediction is that the priest is the father of Hester’s daughter and that is why she does not want anyone to know.

Wendy: Life is Not Good!

December 5th, 2011

Lately I’ve been feeling really stressed, irritated, and just sad in general. I feel like I am trying so hard in every aspect of my life, especially in my academic life, but in the end, my hard work is not paying off. I feel like no matter how hard I try nothing in my life goes right anymore. I just don’t know what to do anymore, and on top of all finals are approaching, and I am very scared of not doing well on my finals either. I guess I have to keep trying, but it is hard to keep trying when I feel like I am already giving my all. :/

Rashada: Creeper status

December 4th, 2011

It’s 2:18 am and I can’t get to sleep. I just watched this creepy movie called “Albino Farm”…maybe I’m scared that they’re cannibals outside my window..I don’t know but I’m freaked out. My alarm clock just went out for no reason..Okay? That’s pretty weird. Time to turn on Disney Channel :) ! American Dragon Jake Long is on. Haven’t seen this show in years lol. Anyways, I got home late tonight because I was at Chilli’s with some semi important people. I need to get all A’s next semester and I get a car after graduation :) I’m excited..but what if I don’t get ALL A’s. What if I get one B and the rest A’s? I’m freaking out. Paulina, Ellie and Wendy will be my best friends next semester because I can really use their brain! Haha :) I love those girls! But yeah…I’m creeped out due to that movie. I hope I can sleep now..actually no. I’m making coffee so I can stay awake. Goodnight APers :) work hard on your Book Analysis Essays!

Wendy: Theme Study!

November 20th, 2011

The theme study I have chosen to do is friendship and love. The three books I am choosing are The Awakening by Kate Chopin, Love in Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. The next book I will read is Love in Time of Cholera.

Wendy: Response to Siddartha

November 9th, 2011

This book has really made me connect with Siddhartha. Just like him, I have questioned if what I am following is the correct path. I have also wanted to seek a deeper truth, but at the same time, I do have a great amount of faith in my religion and I do not like to question God.

I think Siddhartha has courage to stand up for what he believes in and to openly question his religion, whether it is wrong or right to do so. Moreover, this book so far has taught me that in order to gain knowledge and seek the truth, you have to question certain things. That is the only way one will obtain knowledge but most of all wisdom.

Wendy: The tree symbol in Beloved

October 30th, 2011

One of the symbols in Beloved is the tree. From the beginning to end, trees are mentioned many times. The symbolism of the tree is life and comfort. The trees are always referred to when something happens, whether it is good or bad. For instance, the narrator says, “They stepped out one by one from amongst the ringing trees” (103). In this quote the people were all in the trees; the place they felt safe and only stepped out because Baby Suggs was going to preach. They knew they were safe with her. Moreover, the symbolism of life can be expressed through Sethe’s scar, which is shaped like a tree. The author wrote, “He rubbed his cheek on her back and learned that way her sorrow, the roots of it; its wide trunk and intricate branches” (20). Even though her scar demonstrates a dark side of her life, it still demonstrates an essential part of life. It demonstrates how in life, one will be faced with obstacles that will break one apart but makes one gain strength and get up. This is what life is all about; it’s about falling and then working hard to get back up.
