Nathan: The Class

May 6th, 2012

Before coming into AP English, I thought it was going to be just like any other class, but just a little bit harder. I quickly realized how much more it is then just another class. Yes it is a class where you need to push yourself, but it pushes you in the right direction. Every single class, we learn something that will not only help us on the test, but to bring to our future in education.

Our path to the test has been a bumpy one, but we are all seeing the light of passing the AP test. This test is our goal, and we have had that distilled in our minds by the constant barking (in a good way) by Mr. Isero. We have made our goal of reading 32498723 amount of books and writing 943803 essays, but what counts is how we do on this test and that is our new goal.

Nathan: SF Youth in “Perpetual Grief”

March 11th, 2012

This article is of a security guard at John O’Connell High School in San Francisco and how she notices that the youth have changed. She has noticed more R.I.P. laminated cards then crosses around people’s necks.

She has noticed how today’s youth do not care about living and just want to fight and have wars. She shares about how youth in SF are in mourning every day, and in perpetual grief because of the passing of friends and family on a consistent basis.

Nathan: NBA All-Star Weekend

February 26th, 2012

Like every other year, I was excited to watch the annual All-Star Weekend (Saturday is my favorite day out of the three), but it turned out to be boring. The Rookie vs. Sophomore game was fun and exciting to watch. Then came Saturday, the day where all the all the individual player showcasing happens. The highly anticipated Dunk Contest is usually everyone’s favorite part, but this year it was very disappointing. The contest seemed scripted and that is what disappointed me. What is a contest if it isn’t really played for pride and the hunger to win? Well, hopefully today’s All-Star game will be better.

Nathan: Hamlet is confusing

February 19th, 2012

The book that we are reading right now is so confusing. I think at least 3/4 of the time, I do not know what is going on. I try to read it over and over, but sometimes it doesn’t work like that. I think that if it was not for SparkNotes, I would be even more lost than I already am! At least we are almost on to the next book.

Nathan: Life

February 12th, 2012

As of now, I do have negatives in my life but I really try to put them to the side. I try to allow the positives overcome the negatives so I can finish my senior year and have fun doing it. I am mostly excited to be done with high school and move onto bigger and better things (college). This has been a highly anticipated year for many of us, well, the whole world’s class of 2012! Graduating is something that everyone should be looking forward to because of all the hard work that each individual has done.

Nathan: Scarlet Letter

January 22nd, 2012

What does Chillingworth’s quest for revenge say about justice, punishment, and evil?

Chillingworth’s quest for revenge in my own personal point of view, is necessary. There is a argument of privacy that Hester deserves and what not, but they separated with a bond and a trust that nothing of adultery/ etc. would take place. This says that in revenge, justice should be taken place, but is it right always? I would say that depends on the situation and the severity of the situation.

The punishment and the evil that Chillingworth sets out for kind of says that justice is not always a task that law enforcement/ etc. can handle. The situation that Chillingworth is in, forces him to take it into his own hands. His wife commits adultery and he is heart broken and wants to punish the person who made his wife pregnant. This says that in justice sometimes, situations and cases need to be taken by the horn and handled by yourself.

Nathan: The Scarlet Letter

January 8th, 2012

The Scarlet Letter is an interesting book, but it is also a very confusing book. When I read the book, I almost have to read some lines twice to get it. The challenge isn’t a bad thing, but it is a good thing that is helping me become a better reader. The Scarlet Letter shows religion and how people were brought up to think about adultery back in the day. The book has not really affected my soul, maybe it will affect my soul when I am finished with the book and fully analyze it. The novel revolves around a deep message that I have yet to find. I hope that I can find this message out soon, or at least when the book ends.

Nathan: Siddartha!

November 9th, 2011

Siddhartha is one of those books that you have to kind of read the entire book before you can judge. Throughout the book, you find Siddartha putting himself in different positions so he can find the meaning of his life. How can I personally judge someone based on four chapters? But I can tell you that Siddhartha is finding out what his path is, and I admire that. Everyone takes their own steps into finding what is their path and has eye openers. In order to find your path, you need to take a path, and that is what Siddartha is doing.

Nathan: Symbols in Beloved

October 29th, 2011

The symbol of milk is used as a symbol of struggle. Sethe had bad experiences with milk. It was used in violation of her and it was not a substantial food source for kids. Morrison says, “It was the food you know. If you ain’t got nothing but milk to give em, well they don’t do things so quick.” (187) Milk was their only source of food for babies and that was not enough for a baby to grow with. Milk is seen as a symbol of struggle because babies struggle to get stronger with only milk and Sethe had a power struggle has other men violated her and took her milk. Her interactions with milk portray her struggles.

Nate: Isolation in our time, chosen or not?

September 30th, 2011

My slideshow progresses from choosing to isolate yourself to forced isolation. The Stranger and The Metamorphosis show how both Meursault and Gregor become strangers in society in some type of way.

The first part of this video is how people today choose to isolate themselves from society, just like Gregor. When the music changes, it shows the way people are forcefully isolated. Mersault was forced into isolation through his mindset that life is going to end.

The music is not there just for show…DUH! “Through The Wire,” by Kanye West, resembles how teens in today’s society choose to be isolated. West had to speak through the wires that held his face together. He chose for himself to write a song when his mouth was shut, and that is what people need to do, get out and have fun. On the other hand, “The Imperial March: by John Williams resembles Meursault’s choice to isolate himself, because when joining the dark side, you have a choice to do so or die!

Nathan: This weather is all bad…

September 25th, 2011

So the weather in the beginning of the week was perfect, and I swear that made me always feel good. Lately, it has been horrible and makes me feel like staying at home. I wish the weather was always at a good temperature because this cold weather is a no-no. Being an AP student now makes me feel successful. This year is my opportunity to set my future off right, and I love the way I have started it.

Every time I think about my future, I think about where I am going to be at and what I am going to do with my life. I then realize how I used to think about life and my values have changed from my freshman year. I don’t know if my post is going to be worth full credit but I hope it is.
