Ellie: Life is beautiful

May 6th, 2012

I decided that I am not going to speak simply about AP English but about my journey in high school and what these last four years mean for my life.

AP English is an amazing class and I am very happy that I decided to take it although I have had my rough patches and it has not been the easiest of classes I could not be prouder. Not only did my grammar improve, my analysis, my vocabulary, and my writing style has drastically improved. I know that now I can say I worked hard. AP Spanish ended badly because I couldn’t stay strong and decided to give up, but AP English helped me see that I can accomplish anything I long for.

Ahh high school, it has been quite a ride. I am going to miss the teachers, the people, the curriculum, and the life. So much is going to change and I won’t be the same person because high school changed all of that. At first, I was not sure if Leadership was the right school for me but I learned so much, that no amount of drama, hate, envy, jealousy, or corruption could have ruined all the life lessons I learned. I will admit that I am excited to graduate, travel and see the world this summer. I might not have gotten into the school of my dreams but I am not giving up, it was just not meant for me at this moment but someday it will. I am very proud of my classmates I know that they will achieve greatness in life in whatever they chose to do. CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE WHO GOT INTO THE SCHOOLS OF THEIR DREAMS! As for me, I am ready to take on the world just on a different path. The world is my oasis and I cannot wait to see what the world has in store for me after June 2, 2012.

Good luck Everyone on their test we can do this we know it, so now let’s show the world what we have achieved with all this hard work and dedication. Let’s take on the world!

Ellie: AP Test!

April 15th, 2012

The AP Test is long, but it wasn’t as long as the AP Spanish test, so time-wise, it was not a problem. One of my strengths is my ability to refocus myself when I know I am out of focus. Some of my weaknesses were how sleepy I was while I was taking the test. I kept thinking that I should have been resting in bed. I also kept getting distracted by my own thoughts as I was reading some of the passages because they were super boring. I need to try harder and I will continue to practice using my yellow book. Something funny happening in my life… nothing, just busy.

Quizzards: March 8

March 12th, 2012

There were fewer Quizzards this time, but it’s wonderful to see who is really stepping things up, making sure to put in consistent study, and reading The Awakening closely.

Congratulations to the five Quizzards: Wendy, Chavonni, Chris, Nathaly, and Ellie!

Ellie: Dementia Among Aging Criminals

March 11th, 2012

The article is about inmates who are serving 25 years to life and are over 55 with dementia and are slowly “losing their minds.”

The government is paying other inmates to care for those who cannot take care of themselves. This is really scary to me because I was not aware of what is happening in prisons.

Life is very difficult for even the inmates in there. No one takes notice of inmates because they are not a part of our normal society.

I really liked reading this article because I was able to learn more and now I know that gangs are not the only problem in prison. I am considering my life as an attorney even more now.

Ellie: The Awakening so far

March 4th, 2012

I am really enjoying the book. I am actually even reading ahead. I never knew I would actually enjoy an assigned book so much. The book is easy to understand. This time, I know what is happening and I enjoy it. This book is a good book and I am enjoying it. I cannot wait until I finish to see what happens. Happy Sunday, everyone!

Ellie: Reno, Circus Circus

February 19th, 2012

My life is amazing right now and my relationship is thriving. I am happy it is not like Hamlet. My boyfriend is not going crazy and my father is well and alive and crazy like always.

Right now, I am actually in Reno about to get ready to go out tonight. This trip has been interesting; that is about the only word that can describe this trip.

I have been with my family and boyfriend. I am really happy. I don’t want to go back to school.

I am sort of excited for the test. I want to take it to see what I am capable of and how good I am at English. Well, have to get going! I hope everyone else is having an amazing weekend. :)

Ellie: Positive and Negative

February 12th, 2012

Life is wonderful right now. I just got back from Bakersfield. I spent the entire weekend with my family, and I realized how much I missed them. I am very grateful to have my family in my life. I know how lucky I am to have both of my parents and a loving family that supports me.

The negative things in my life would have to be that one of my uncles has cancer and he is really sick, and it was really difficult to say goodbye, knowing that by the time I come back to Bakersfield, he might not be there anymore.

I also want to improve my grades so I am going to work really hard this week.

Happy Sunday everyone!!

Essay of the Week: “Eating Symbols”

February 10th, 2012

I am very happy to announce the Essay of the Week recipient: Marco! This is his second win. Congratulations. As usual, Marco writes a clear essay with a strong thesis, along with solid organization. Particularly impressive is his last body paragraph, in which talks about Amy Tan’s use of point of view.

Congratulations also to the EoW finalists: Nathaly, Pauline, Ellie, and Esteffany.

Please read Marco’s essay and leave comments. Thank you.

Eating Symbols

In a novel, an eating scene can symbolize much more than just a meal. In the Joy Luck Club, by Amy Tan, a dining scene between Lindo and Waverly Jong, Rich Shields who is Waverly’s husband, and Waverly’s family, reveals a lot about a family’s Chinese tradition. In her book, Tan expresses how the traditions in Chinese culture fit into the lives of their Americanized offspring.

Through the dining scene, Tan reveals the significance of Chinese tradition. The scene revolves around Waverly’s husband, Rich, who is not aware of the traditions Waverly’s family holds. At the dinner table, Rich drinks two glasses of wine, while the family had only drank less than half of one. Here, Rich is not aware that the glass of wine is just for tasting, and not for pleasure. Following this event, Rich takes a big portion of the best dish prepared by Lindo Jong. Since it is the best plate at the table, everyone is supposed to take a small portion of it, and then wait to get more until everyone else at the table had had a portion of it. Finally, in the end of the scene, Rich unknowingly criticizes Lindo’s cooking. It is Chinese cook custom for the cook to insult their dishes, but only those cooked with best pride. Instead of proclaiming it to be the best dish she had cooked, Rich instead adds on condiment to it in order for it to taste better. The dinner scene here reveals the importance of knowing the customs and traditions of other cultures besides your own.

The scene incorporates the main theme of keeping customs and traditions in each culture. The novel follows four daughters who have been Americanized and their four Chinese mothers. Throughout the novel, the daughters want to prove to their mothers that they are capable of being on their own, and following their new American traditions. Although they want to be independent, they still want to maintain their Chinese traditions. Each daughter wants their parents to accept their American partner, so it is important for them to also know the Chinese customs. Rich proves to Waverly’s mother and family that he is not aware of their customs, and therefore cannot show the family respect.  Rich does not prove that he is not a rude person, he just is ignorant of the customs he needs to follow. The ignorance Rich holds is what Waverly’s mother does not want in the family.

The dinner scene is effective at portraying the message Tan expresses in her novel. Without this scene in the novel, the significance of following a different culture’s traditions would not be there. The scene has a bit of humor in it, allowing the reader to sympathize for Rich as he blindly insults Chinese traditions. Having Waverly explain the scene, and not Rich or Lindo also makes the scene effective. Her point of view allows for the reader to see what he is doing wrong, and allowing the character to express her mother’s and her feelings towards the traditions. If the point of view of the scene had been from Rich’s perspective, the reader would not be aware of the mistakes he is making. The scene from the perspective of Lindo would show anger towards Rich which would lead the reader to believe he is just a rude person in general.

It is through this dinner scene that the reader can see the importance of being aware of a different cultures traditions. The novel shows the importance of keeping customs in each culture. Rich being an outsider and not knowing Chinese culture is what Lindo tries to protect her daughter from.

Quizzards of the Week, February 10

February 10th, 2012

I am happy to announce this week’s Quizzards, students who received perfect 10s on Quiz #6.

Monae            Ellie                 Brenda

Congratulations to the Quizzards! Overall, there weren’t as many perfect scores, but overall, the quiz grades are going up. Remember that the quiz is an extremely easy way to raise your grade.

All you have to do is read, study the words, and study the literary devices.

I’m looking forward to better quiz scores in the future. Let’s make it happen.

Ellie: The Scarlet Letter Change

January 22nd, 2012

In the beginning of The Scarlet Letter Hester was forced to wear an A that stood for Adultery. Later on as the novel progressed the letter began to have a different meaning, able. Hester had a child of another man while her husband was away and for that she was forced to wear the A. Hester was aware of the mistake she had made and she knew that she has to take full responsibility. Hester is a very strong woman who has to endure many humiliations but yet she continues to maintain strong and fight through all of it.

After a while the town begins to realize that she is a really strong woman who fights to keep her and her daughter a float. She sells her skill to the town and everyone in town loves her for her tailoring skills. To me it seems as normal scandals. When it all first started everyone in town is shocked and appalled that a woman would ever do that, but as time goes by the town in a way forgets all about that incident. When something huge occurs in a town usually it takes the town a while to adjust then they brush it off like typical gossip and eventually it is as if nothing occurred.

Ellie: Response to The Scarlet Letter

January 8th, 2012

I am really enjoying the book. I guess it’s because of the way it started off. It really captured my attention in the beginning. Right when I started reading, I wanted to continue to read. With the previous books, I did not really like to read them, but with this one, I read whenever I get a chance. I read in the car on my way to work and even when I’m on my way out.

My favorite character is Hester because she is a rule-breaking lady. I like how she does not care what other people say or do. She does what she wants and is independent. This book has made me really reflect on certain things that I’ve done that I am not necessarily proud of. I don’t know where those reflections will take me; all I know is that something positive will come from them.

My favorite part so far is when her husband comes back because I feel that is the real beginning of the book. It is really interesting and I am enjoying reading it. Although I haven’t been a big fan of all the books, this book is my favorite so far.

I can’t wait to see what happens, although I think that the priest is the one who is the dad of the baby. That whole town to me is fake and is living in sin in a way. No one is perfect and the people who are speaking badly about water and punishing her are just as sinful as she is. I’m going to keep reading ahead and see how far I get by next class. Goodnight guys!

Ellie: theWOWweekend

December 4th, 2011

So you guys know I am completely in love with Kim Kardashian. It is 6:50 p.m and I am dying for these 10 minutes to go by so I can watch the second episode of KKTNY2!!! So I spent a whole week balancing out work, school, and going wherever I could to go find the book. Crazy week! I found the book today all the way in Emeryville… Today I went shopping, I organized all my closets and I did homework, oh and did I mention I found my book!!! Productive day, OH YESSS! I hope everyone else had such an amazing productive Sunday! =)

Rashada: Creeper status

December 4th, 2011

It’s 2:18 am and I can’t get to sleep. I just watched this creepy movie called “Albino Farm”…maybe I’m scared that they’re cannibals outside my window..I don’t know but I’m freaked out. My alarm clock just went out for no reason..Okay? That’s pretty weird. Time to turn on Disney Channel :) ! American Dragon Jake Long is on. Haven’t seen this show in years lol. Anyways, I got home late tonight because I was at Chilli’s with some semi important people. I need to get all A’s next semester and I get a car after graduation :) I’m excited..but what if I don’t get ALL A’s. What if I get one B and the rest A’s? I’m freaking out. Paulina, Ellie and Wendy will be my best friends next semester because I can really use their brain! Haha :) I love those girls! But yeah…I’m creeped out due to that movie. I hope I can sleep now..actually no. I’m making coffee so I can stay awake. Goodnight APers :) work hard on your Book Analysis Essays!

Ellie: Theme Study! -__-

November 20th, 2011

I have decided to do my theme study on Friendship & Love. I am choosing Beloved, The Color Purple and the third book I still have not decided on. I am going to begin by reading The Color Purple.

JC: I’m the student.. of YOUR WEEK! :)

November 16th, 2011

So….Being student of the week was alright. I didn’t have anything exciting during my week besides another AP Essay, which I feel confident about. :) Anyway, I feel like Student of the Week is cool in our class. The best thing I did was probably say, “Yeah, go ahead” when someone asked me if they could use the bathroom. Haha! It’s a big role, but not really a hard job being the Student of the Week. I would be it again, but I doubt you can reign two times in the same semester. That’d be the best! But yeah, my three days of ruling the class was nothing special but work, work, and GRIT!!

Advice for the next SoW, Ellie: Don’t be a pushover when it comes to the bathroom! If Isero is talking, tell those suckers to be quiet and wait for passing period! Thanks for choosing me, Paulina! :)

Ellie: Siddhartha

November 9th, 2011

Siddhartha is a book that I am really enjoying because I find myself relating myself to Siddhartha and his relationship with his father. Siddhartha does what he can in order to please his father but at the same time he wants to be able to do his own thing which is also what I am about. I also liked how Siddhartha is really close to Govinda because he has someone who he can tell everything to. So far I am enjoting the book. I want to see what the ending is all about. KEEP READING EVERYONE! (It’s better than Beloved.)
