Carmen: One of my last posts on iseroma

May 6th, 2012

As we all know, the end is near. The AP test is coming, everything that we have been fighting for is finally here. All those stressful nights to make the deadline are finally over. All the procrastination to finish the books is finally done and over with. I’m proud that I made it this far, having personal problems and having Isero pushing you at the same time is tough. This year was a year to remember, I still can not believe how far everyone has got. I started off being horrible at writing, and now I’m able to write an essay in 30 minutes. I guess all those essays that stressed me out actually helped me out in the long run.

I still remember the begging of the year when I made a video about Princess :/ I remember thinking to myself that I was either crazy or dumb for taking AP English because of all the work. I’m just happy that I pulled through, after all I never give up. I guess all that i’m trying to say is that i’m thankful for this class. AP English pushed me to my limit and im happy it did because now I can leave LHS saying that I did learn something. Good luck to all of us on the test and remember, we did not bust our a** off for nothing!

Carmen: “The Story of an Hour”

March 11th, 2012

I decided to read the article about the story we read in class. Even though The Awakening is not my all-time favorite book, the short story actually hit the spot.

In the article, they discussed marriage and what it used to mean back then. The part that struck me the most is when the author said that the “wife” might have loved her husband but not wanted to be with him.

I believe this part is the emphasis of the story since I said something similar to this in our last Socratic. As of now I’m not a believer of love as well as marriage and both The Awakening and the short story make me see a different side, the ugly side of love and marriage actually. Overall I really enjoyed reading the article, it discussed some things that I didn’t even think about.

Carmen: The Awakening

March 4th, 2012

So far, I’m not a huge fan of The Awakening. It’s a good book, don’t get me wrong, but I feel dumbfounded. The reason for why I feel like this is because I feel like the book has so much meaning, yet I don’t even understand 10% of it. Every single page has some incredible meaning yet I can’t see it or understand it how much I would like to.

Carmen: Scarlet Letter

January 22nd, 2012

Chillingsworth revenge tells us that there is never a good guy. Some might say he is the good guy but to be honest I feel like he is a hypocrite. He suffered from the cheating but he is making Dimmsdale suffer as well? I feel like is pretty dumb, with the punishment I feel like Chillingworth is blinded. He thinks he is only punishing Dimmsdale when in reality he is to blind to see that he is punishing himself. That grudge he holds is killing him from the inside as well as the sin Dimmsdale committed.

At first the scarlet letter is seen as a symbol for sin, Hester is punish for her cheating. After all the years the scarlet letter changes its meaning but to be honest I cant quite put my finger on what it truly means after. Maybe it shows that everyone makes mistakes in life and is a process every human must take? Im not to sure, im pretty much confused.

Carmen: My response to The Scarlet Letter

January 8th, 2012

I enjoy the book, but I’m still waiting for something crazy to happen. Yeah, some dramatic things have happened, but I’m still waiting for the most exciting part. I have to say my favorite character is Hester’s husband. He is extremely determined and nice at the same time, and he truly loves her and cares for her. Even though she doesn’t, I feel bad for the guy :( His determination to finding the guy is extreme; I guess that’s what I like about him the most. Hester is cool but she’s a bit to dramatic for me, it’s actually funny :)

Carmen: Life…

December 4th, 2011

Right now life is too complicated :/ so I prefer to put those problems aside. I know is not the best thing to do but I prefer to go with the flow :)   Right now I just want to worry about school and finishing strong. I don’t want other things to take my attention away. I’m pretty excited for Christmas; my mother already decorated the house, which is pretty awesome. 2012 is going to be a very interesting year, new life, new emotions, new friends, new relationships. It’s scary, but like I said I prefer to just go with the flow. So far I’m not a big fan of Ellen Foster. I’m completely indifferent toward the book. :/Anyway, let’s finish strong, APers :D

Carmen: Journey vs. Friendship and Love

November 20th, 2011

So far im stuck, the reason why I like the theme of  Journey is because I love reading about destiny, and what not. Plus Im going to have to read The Road which I heard is a extreme book. Im also stuck between Friendship & Love because to be honest Im one heck of a corny person :) Right now Journey is winning, hopefully I can make up my mind up by tomorrow and If i do pick Journey I will totally start reading  The Road first.

Carmen: Siddhartha an atheist?

November 8th, 2011

Hey :) So far I’m loving Siddhartha, I can relate so much to this book. In a way, Siddhartha sounds like a atheist when he talks about his religion, and since I’m an atheist, I can relate. I love how he questions religion so much because I know I do the same all the time. I’m not trying to disrespect anyone, I just think he has guts for questioning his religion. He doesn’t let others stop him, and he is all about finding his own destiny, which is extremely brave.

Tips from Brenda, Student of the Week #7

November 7th, 2011

Hi everyone! It was nice being Student of the Week; I would like to thank Carmen for choosing me. I know Beloved was a hard read for a lot of us, but we shouldn’t give up! These challenges are only helping us become better English students. By the end of the year, we will be able to pass the AP exam. :)

One tip I would like to give to everyone is to ask help when you need it. Even if you’re behind in reading or you’re confused about an assignment, it’s better to ask for help earlier than later. Also, I’d just like to thank everyone in this class for making it fun while still challenging ourselves. :D

First Night of Video Chat :)

November 7th, 2011

Hahaha! Tonight was pretty fun. Although Carmen and David were both MIA for a while, and I was being for a while, it was fun :) LOL I’m excited for the next Weekender. Also, I think Siddhartha is going to be a good book for me!

P.S. Stephanie saw me doing some embarrassing things while on camera! LOL

Carmen: Why Is Water Symbolic?

October 30th, 2011

In the story, Morrison used many symbols that related to mother nature. First she used the symbol of water to show birth and rebirth. After Sethe escaped, she had to cross a river. During the crossing, she gave birth to Denver in a canoe. Beloved also comes back to life and she comes out from the water. “A fully dressed woman walked out of the water.” For example, during a baptism, water is used to show resurrection to a new life. Water also symbolizes cleansing, washing away all sins. The symbol of water impacts Sethe’s life since it shows the rebirth of Beloved, which turns into a conflict Sethe has to face to finally move on from her past.

Tips from Wendy, SoW #5: Keep It Up! :)

October 13th, 2011

Hello, my AP English family. :) First of all, I want to thank David for choosing me as the fifth Student of the Week. I am so glad that I was able to experience being Student of the Week, which I really enjoyed being. Moreover, I want to acknowledge the hard work we are all doing, and I am really happy to see how much we have improved this first quarter.

I know this class is challenging, and it stresses us out, but in the end, it is that challenge that is making us better AP English students. We are all hard working students and we all deserve to be students of the week. I really like how even though the class is hard, we manage to keep it fun. :D If we continue the hard work, I am sure we’ll all pass our AP English test!

SO, let’s keep working hard, help each other out and keep the class FUN! We got this, you guys! Congratulations, Carmen for being the sixth student of the week. :D
