LHS boys basketball beats Gateway in OT

Leadership High School’s boys basketball team beat Gateway High School 45-43 in a back-and-forth playoff duel that went into overtime.

Gateway’s Kenechi Anigbogu, a junior (and extremely tall person), made a clutch last-second shot to force overtime, but Leadership’s squad, led by sophomore Joshua Blueford (17 points) and junior Derek Russell (11 points), did not falter.

Despite missing several free-throw shots, LHS played a tough and swarming defense, which rattled Gateway’s players, especially junior Raymond Porter. Nevertheless, in the last moments of overtime, Gateway again seemed to pull off a miracle, but a three-point shot was called off, which prompted Coach George Adkins and the team to celebrate.

Before this playoff game, Gateway was ranked No. 1 in the league. The team was 3-0 vs. Leadership and 9-1 overall.

About 40 LHS students, parents, and teachers were in attendance. Science teacher Salem Peterson waved her pom-poms and encouraged the crowd to look at the scoreboard.

Leadership now goes on to the finals.

I really enjoyed watching that game because play-offs are more intense than the season game because a team win they will go to the biggest face-off of all times. I hope people would show some love like they did thursday night, and do it today.
