Two things I’m trying to teach you this year

January 31st, 2012

Dear Students,

I try to teach you lots of stuff — how to write clearly, how to read closely, and how to care about your world.

But this year, here are the two most important things I’m teaching.

1. To accomplish something big, you have to work hard to get it.

You can’t just dream it. You can’t just hope that it’ll happen. Rather, you must work hard every day — not just sometimes, not just when you feel like it.

2. You have to honor the commitments you make with others.

You can’t say one thing then do another. Never should you hide behind an excuse that “things came up.” Care about people who care about you.

I hope you’ll take these lessons seriously, even after you pass my class.

Sincerely,
Mr. Isero

Leo: Wikipedia is blacked out for 24 hours!

January 19th, 2012

As of 12 a.m. ET Thursday, Wikipedia is blacked out for 24 hours as a response for SOPA and PIPA. Because of such protests, two major supporters of these two bills have withdrawn. I feel frustrated because I need to look up some information at that moment!

New at iseroma: Better sharing

December 24th, 2011

You know you want to tweet out your peers’ posts, right? Well, now you can in a better way than you used to!

Check out the bottom of each post. It gives you four choices. You can like a post on Facebook, Tweet it, Google +1 it, or Share it, using another service.

The best thing is that now you’ll know how many times each has been shared.

Test it out!

New at iseroma: Contributors can upload files

December 24th, 2011

Before today, all you could do was embed videos.

Now you can upload images, audio, and other types of files to express yourself and to make your posts more engaging.

Try it out!

Another great dinner with my 2008 Advisory

December 22nd, 2011

One of the best things about Leadership High School is our Advisory program.

A few days ago, my 2008 Advisory and I had our seventh post-graduation dinner (we meet twice a year) to catch up and see how everyone is doing.

You can see some of my advisees to the right!

This time, the main thing my students wanted to talk about was college. Marilyn, first in her family to attend college (like nearly all LHS students), just graduated a semester early from UCLA. Now she’s applying to a master’s program in social work. Amy, finishing up at UC Santa Cruz with a double major in American Studies and Psychology, said she “really likes school.”

Angelica just got a B in Microbiology after studying the hardest she’s ever studied in her life. When Jeremiah said he wanted to take a semester off to get a job and take care of finances, Ja’Nay warned him that if he did, he’d never go back. Despite facing health issues, Jason said he feels best when he’s in school. And Franklin somehow fits in a full-time load at San Jose State while working 40 hours a week doing security in Hunters Point.

Another topic of conversation was the recent news reports about Leadership High School. I told them about the California Charter Schools Association’s public call to close our school. We got into a good conversation about the influence that LHS had on their lives. Everyone spoke highly of their experience and wanted to find out how they could help with the school’s charter renewal. Franklin was certain that he wouldn’t have attended college. Others talked about how the school taught them the importance of social justice.

It was heartwarming to see my advisees again. They are good people doing good things. I always look forward to our dinners, and I hope we continue our tradition for years to come.

It’s clear that the Advisory program helped my students navigate high school. But it’s also clear that it’s offering them a way to stay connected in adulthood. After all, growing up doesn’t end at 18.

LHS is not at risk of immediate closure

December 16th, 2011

You’ve probably heard about the negative news that LHS received from the California Charter School Association. A good conversation has already begun on Facebook. Also, here are articles from The Examiner (go Kevin!) the San Francisco Chronicle.

Please read the school’s response, which gives a more complete picture. (Click on the bottom right to go full screen.)

Also, check out my post at iserotope.com. What do you think? Please leave comments to keep this conversation going.

A follow-up to World AIDS Day

December 1st, 2011

We had a good conversation in class today, and I heard that the Class of 2012 represented LHS well by speaking with the governmental official.

I just saw this clip. Watch it and let me know what you think. Given what you learned today in your classes, what are your thoughts?

iseroma.com has a new mobile app (sort of)

November 26th, 2011

Several of you (mostly Marco) have wished for an iseroma.com mobile site. And now one is here!

The mobile version lets you read posts and leave comments more easily. If you touch the arrow on the top, you should also be able to log in so you can write posts (and email me, if you like).

It’s doesn’t look as good as the regular website, but it might be more convenient for those of you on the go.

Let me know what you think. Check out iseroma.com on your phone and tell me: Is the mobile version better, or should I keep the original website?

Let me know in the comments.

Carmen: Journey vs. Friendship and Love

November 20th, 2011

So far im stuck, the reason why I like the theme of  Journey is because I love reading about destiny, and what not. Plus Im going to have to read The Road which I heard is a extreme book. Im also stuck between Friendship & Love because to be honest Im one heck of a corny person :) Right now Journey is winning, hopefully I can make up my mind up by tomorrow and If i do pick Journey I will totally start reading  The Road first.

If you like Star Wars, you’ll like this.

Einar Sevilla published in The Guardsman!

November 16th, 2011

Einar (right) in 10th grade in 2007.

LHS graduate Einar Sevilla was published today in The Guardsman, the newspaper at San Francisco City College.

His article, “Fighting for the Dream,” profiles CCSF student Raul Berrera, his struggle for a college education in the United States, and the pitfalls and possible false promises of the newly enacted Dream Act.

Einar graduated from LHS in 2009 and is currently serving as Chris’s writing mentor. In addition, he took AP English in 2008-09 with teacher Tony Johnston.

Congratulations, Einar!

A quick review of MLA format

November 3rd, 2011

YouTube is a great resource for learning how to do stuff. Here’s a quick, two-minute video about MLA format, in case you need a refresher.

One of the hardest parts of MLA format is compiling your list of references. Google Docs has a free application called EasyBib (just click on arrow up top when you’re in Google Docs) that will make your Works Cited page automatically.

Wendy: My Studious Sunday :)

September 25th, 2011

So today, Marco, Laura, and Nathaly came over to my house to watch an AP Bio movie that Ms. Harrat assigned for us to watch. Ten minutes into the movie, we realized it was going to be a LONG day. The movie was SOOOO boring, it took four hours for us to finish it due to the many breaks that we took during the process. One of those breaks was to eat pizza :) Even though Marco was full, and said he was not going to eat anymore, he finished the remains of the pizza and stuffed them down his throat :) Now that the movie is over, Laura and I are doing our AP Calculus homework, while Marco sits in the corner eating the last piece of candy my brother gave us.

It’s been a long day, and it will continue to be long until we finish our Psychology homework. It’s hot in my room, so it makes it even harder to concentrate on our work.

Marco just realized that my laptop is chipped and he called me a “dumbass.” He’s so funny, I have no idea what I would do without him to make my day so much brighter :) (Awww moment). Anyway, I’m going to attempt to finish my homework now, so goodbye! :)

So many LHS students will be the first in their families to graduate from college. That’s what makes what we do important and special: You’re leading yourself and your community by focusing on education.

LHS graduates Alex L. and Daisy M. are featured in this First Graduate video. (I taught them and am very proud that they’re graduating from college next month.) If you’re interested in joining First Graduate, see your adviser immediately!

March 22nd, 2011

The ninth graders performed their mock trial last Thursday after preparing direct testimonies, court papers, and cross examinations.

It was a very positive day!

Judges Harold Kahn, Ronald Albers, and Gail Dekreon were impressed by the students’ preparation.

This is the 11th year in a row that ninth graders at Leadership High School have participated in a trial at the San Francisco Superior Court.

Ivan Lopez, Class of 2004, Owner of Artillery AG

Artillery AG: Local Fashion is Good For You

Ivan Lopez, owner of Artillery AG.

Upon stepping into Artillery Apparel Gallery, you’re immediately faced with a huge, gold framed easel, holding a t-shirt, stretched like canvas, in various stages of painting. This is no upright screen-print job, but rather, hand-painted t-shirts by Artillery AG’s owner, Ivan Lopez.

Lopez is straight up, born-and-bred Mission hip. After studying Industrial Design at Pratt and selling his shirts on street corners in NYC, he returned to SF and open Artillery AG right in his hometown hood, the Mission.

Artillery AG opened in 2009 with 7 local artisans and now features over 40 of the Bay Areas best designers taking over 70% of the store’s merchandise. Lopez says he wanted a concrete, creative environment to promote independent art and design. The stores features North Beach’s Indie Industries, Nicacelly reconstructed women’s apparel, Platinum Dirt leather clutch bags, and elegant silver jewelry by Maria Engracia.

Headlining all of the merch is of course, Lopez’ signature painted t-shirts. Lopez hand-paints each shirt right in the store, with his special blend of acrylic and fabric medium. The shirts are then heat-pressed to lock down the lively designs, ranging from kitschy ice cream cones to vibrant animals. The shirts start at $35, with custom work available, starting at $45.

The best part? Great art is always a great excuse to party. Artillery AG throws a big “Art Is Good For You”, art show every two months. This Saturday, join in on the festivities and check out SF artist, Shawn Ray Harris’ 3-D photography. This show will feature a series of photographs shot on Harris’ home-built camera, exclusively for Artillery AG.

Sean Ray Harris at Artillery AG (2751 Mission St.), Saturday Feb 5 – April 1. Opening reception Feb 5 from 7:30pm – 11pm, featuring live music.
